About

About? This is about me. It’s all about me.

Some people think I spend too much money on concerts and travel. They’re wrong of course. Is that even possible?

I’m known to most as Mo, to some as Dad, and have just moved out of Titirangi, Auckland, New Zealand – but I’m not going to change the name.  Too many good associations with the original song.

My boys think it’s cool reading about Dad’s travel stories, so this is for Sam and Dom.

Thanks for checking out Life Is Like A Dumpling! Looking forward to reading more of your posts 🙂

  2. westiedad says:

Thanks very much. Having just returned from China, the dumpling caught my eye. You can’t go wrong with a blog about travel and food!

Thank you for following me! Great blog!

  4. I like it… good stuff

Hi Mo, Thank you for following my photography blog. I’ve enjoyed reading yours. Liked your Bowie review!

    • westiedad says:

Hi Jane – thanks very much. I’m still a beginner in this blog world, but that Bowie post was my first hesitant step. I had plans for an interview with the support band; they never replied. I’m glad Mr B is back!

  6. Thanks for the follow on my blog. I hope you enjoy the stories. Love yours too and will be following. We had a month in China six years ago and loved every moment, including the hilarious signage. Garrulous Gwendoline, The Reluctant Retiree

  7. Thanks for reading my latest post! I look forward to reading your posts too!

I knew your song reference right away. So great. Concerts and travel are the best, most rewarding thing to spend money on! Nice choice.
    Thanks for the follow! 🙂

    • westiedad says:

Hi Lily – it’s a great song, isn’t it. I never thought I’d hear Si and Garf sing it live, and they nailed it. It takes me back to the first days of my year in Moscow when I knew no-one and I had just discovered this song. You cover a lot on your blog – I need to dig deeper! And you’re in Victoria? Nice place. Cheers, Mo

      • Lily says:

Yeah Victoria is really nice! I’m still getting used to it. But it’s a great place. Haha yeah my blog has become a pile of craziness. I used to strictly write about Canada, but I got tired of that and now I write about whatever I’m feeling. Hah

I love your blog so much! Your writing style is great – educational and humorous at the same time!

  10. westiedad says:

Hi Ms Z – that’s so kind! I’m still very new to this thing, but I’m enjoying it. I need to go back to the beginning of your story in your blog. The accommodation suggestions in Croatia sound great. I’ll get there one day! 🙂

  11. lightfellow says:

Thanks for following my blog westiedad. I had great fun reading your posts, especially your travels in China- are you still on the go? The captions are hilarious!

    • westiedad says:

Hi there – thanks for the feedback. We’re back now, and I’m writing things up on my spare nights. If my boys went to bed earlier, I’d probably be finished writing up China by now! Love your photos – UK, Baltics, Poland, Morocco. Great stuff.

Thanks for following my blog…………and you can never spend too much money on concerts and travel!

If you havn’t been to Lithuania and Vilnius in particular you are missing one of the undiscovered gems of Europe. Although relatively small as a city it has a wealth of history (did you know that Liuthuania once had the biggest empire in Europe stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea?) and some magnificent buildings. I have made 26 visits so far (partly on business) and have become a great advocate for the country. Do visit!

    • westiedad says:

I’d love to get there, I’ve heard loads of good reports. The logistics of living in New Zealand with two young kids make popping over for a weekend a bit awkward. One day!

  14. devonbabe says:

Thanks for reading and following my blog. I am enjoying yours too! I love New Zealand we went there on our travels a few years ago. Fabulous country.

  15. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I look forward to exploring yours!

  21. TBM says:

Happy travels. Many people think I’m insane as well since I love to travel and try to travel as much as possible.

  22. Hi there Westie Dad, love the sentiments of the about page and it being for your boys. Sorry for not coming over sooner to say thanks for following my own blog, just been away on holiday and trying to sort things out. Oh, love the banner of the ferns and water at the top of your page, New Zealand summed up beautifully. MM 🍀

    • westiedad says:

Hey Mike – always a pleasure to hear from Ireland. I lived there for a year and enjoyed every minute. Will get around to writing about it one day – I have a decade to catch up on before that! Cheers, Mo

  23. What luck to find your fine blog! This is the kind of blog that goes with a good cup of coffee and a leisurely morning to explore. I can’t wait for Saturday morning, because this is where I’ll be. Thanks for stopping by mine!

  24. westiedad says:

Hi Jeanne – thanks for the feedback. Utila looks idyllic. Look forward to hearing more about it. Those beach shots help us get through the NZ winter 🙂

  25. Thanks for the likes and the follows

  26. No, not possible to cut down on travel spending, and, in my case theatre and opera. Not much anyway. I’ll have to get myself over to your neck of the woods sometime, although it seems I get stuck in Australia when traveling that part of the world. Great blog you have, and thanks for the follow!

    • westiedad says:

Thanks for the feedback. Where do you start in Europe for Opera? So many amazing opera houses. I’ve seen performances at the Bolshoi and in Vienna – both stunning venues. I’ll get to those trips on here one day! Cheers!

  27. Well, since I live in Stockholm, that’s a good start for me. For a visitor, the great opera houses in Berlin, London, Milan, Vienna etc would be a far better option. Why not one of the great opera festivals run during summertime? Would be a great experience.

  28. Debbie says:

Hi, Mo! Thanks for the follow. You have a great blog here, very well written. I can see you have an awful lot of catching up to do! Debbie

    • westiedad says:

Hi Debbie, thanks for the feedback – much appreciated. I feel I’m planning the next few trips and reliving the last twenty years at the same time. It’s a long road ahead, but the memories are good ones! Cheers, Mo

Hello there, thank you for stopping by and following trashbus! Your blog seems to be a lot of fun and really interesting – I’ll be definitely back for more!

    • westiedad says:

Hey thanks very much. Somehow I still haven’t made it to the Balkans, but I plan to get there one day. I see you’re in Berlin – what a great city.

      • trashbus says:

Yes, it can be great but it can be very cruel, too … Especially in winter, when icy winds from the east haunt the streets – terrible! That’s when I miss the Balkans the most. You should definitely try and travel the region, it is incredibly diverse and very beautiful. Do you travel your country a lot?

  31. Hey, Cool blog! Very interesting and we will definitely be back. Your friends at http://www.hitchhikershandbook.com

I like the “Biting the Bullfrog” post. Sorry that you had to see all these weird food. But 毛血旺 is actually one of the most famous dishes in Sichuan food! If this doesn’t recall your “bad” memory: I like the 毛血旺! My must-order dish when I eat in Sichuan restaurant! LOL…
By the way, thanks for stopping by my blog. Hope the Italian food can compensate a bit. cheers!

    • westiedad says:

Actually I loved the food in China. I was just really hungry when I was eating the bullfrog, and the pieces of meat were generally quite small, so it took ages. I wouldn’t have minding trying 毛血旺 – maybe next time! We have some Sichuan restaurants in Auckland, so I’ll look for it here. I’m sure that all the meals that sound unusual to Western preferences actually taste great. Bon appetit!
